Balloon Pilot Backgrounders

Balloon Pilot Backgrounders: Why Every Pilot Should Have One

You wouldn’t believe how often I’ve asked a balloon pilot for a backgrounder— only to get a blank look in return. Yet for anyone who represents the ballooning community, a backgrounder is one of the most valuable tools for getting interviews and answering media questions.

A backgrounder isn’t a résumé or a marketing brochure. It’s your official story — a one-page reference that gives event organizers, journalists, sponsors, and community leaders an accurate, professional snapshot of who you are and what you contribute to the sport.

🧭 What to Include in a Pilot Backgrounder

  • Full Name and Title
(e.g., Pilot-in-Command, Commercial Pilot, Crew Chief, Flight Instructor)
  • Home Base & Balloon Name
Include your balloon’s name, registration number, and home city/state (or country for international pilots).
  • Pilot Credentials
License type (Private or Commercial), total flight hours, and notable certifications (FAI, BFA, FAA, etc.).
  • Ballooning Background
A brief story of how you got into ballooning and what keeps you passionate about it.
Example: “Jane Smith began ballooning in 1998 and has flown across 10 U.S. states. Her passion for sharing the joy of flight led her to mentor dozens of student pilots.”
  • Event Participation
List major events where you’ve flown — especially the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, plus rallies, festivals, or international flights.
  • Special Achievements or Awards
Any records, race results, safety commendations, or community service recognitions.
  • Community Involvement
Mentorship, education outreach, or local balloon club roles (e.g., crew training, school presentations).
  • Contact Information & Media Links
Website or social media links (if you share flight photos or updates)
    Email or preferred contact method
  • Optional: Sponsorship information or booking contacts

🪶 Why It Matters

  • Event organizers use your backgrounder to write accurate introductions for pilots.
  • Media outlets rely on it for press releases or interviews.
  • Sponsors use it to verify credibility and alignment.
  • Future generations of balloonists will use it to trace the history of ballooning.

✍️ Pro Tip

Keep your backgrounder updated annually. Right after the Balloon Fiesta is the perfect time to refresh it. Add new events, community outreach efforts, and any recognitions you’ve received during the season.
